Oldies But Goodies

The saying is true that sometimes your oldest friends are your best friends.

I have two women, who shall remain nameless, that this saying pertains to.

Honestly, I’m not sure why they are remaining nameless. Even if I said their names, you would never find them.

Combined they have most likely left a .0086% digital footprint, with neither of them even having a Facebook account.

The way we keep in touch with each other is through email. So 1998.

Regardless of their technological in-advances, they have been my friends through thick and thin.

These two know more about me than any other friends in my life and I pay them on a monthly basis to remain quiet.

We met in high school when I moved to their town, and then eventually the 3 of us ventured off to the same college.

Through the years, we have seen a lot together.

Breakups. Engagements. Weddings. New jobs. Big girl problems. New homes. Losses. Pregnancies. Babies.

It’s a little clique that we all count on when we have great news to share and to turn to when times get tough.

This past weekend we had one of our semi-annual girls weekends.

We talked, laughed, wined and dined.

We caught each other up on our lives; all the while feeling like we had never left each others side.

These two women are very important in my life and I’m so thankful they have put up with me for 20 years.

Trust me, they’ll tell you, it’s not always easy.

But somehow they keep coming back.

I love the history that we have together.

They’re my oldies, but my goodies too.

Do you have old friends that you get together with even now into adulthood?

Mommy Getaway at MotorCity Casino Hotel

My friends and I have had girls-only weekends ever since we all got married. We used to kick the husbands out of the house for 48 hours of wine, appetizers and gossip.

Now that we all have homes filled with kids, this has become quite a difficult task.We came to the conclusion that a change of venue was in order. It was time to look for a kid, animal and husband free zone. Enter the idea of staying at hotels.A girls weekend. In a hotel. Sans kids.

Genius, I tell you. Genius!

This past weekend was our first hotel stay. Between the 3 of us, we have 5 kids under 5 with another on the way (NOT ME! I repeat NOT ME!). So, we took a necessary time out from our families for a night away.We spent Saturday night at MotorCity Casino Hotel. Our overall stay was amazing.

In fact, I hated to leave. I thought the best solution on Sunday was for Charlie to bring the family down to me. Apparently, that wasn’t an option. All great things must come to an end.

I’d like to share with you what made this weekend so spectacular. Besides the company, of course.

#1: The Room.Oh how I loved this room. We had a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom suite. There was a moment I felt like J Lo. However, she hosts American Idol and does razor commercials now.

So, maybe even better than J Lo.The living room and dining room were tres chic. The king beds? Heavenly. Extremely soft with cozy comforters. Flat screen TVs, free Wi-Fi (a must for this computer addict), a fabulous view of the Detroit skyline, comfy chairs to lounge around in, the list could go on and on.

I can’t forget to mention our snack basket filled with all Michigan-made goodies. Nice touch.

#2: The Bathroom. My motto when staying at a hotel: Always find a hotel bathroom that is an upgrade to yours at home. (I have no idea where I came up with this one). This bathroom was just that. And more.

A large sunken jacuzzi tub. Dual-head tiled shower. Private toilet (my hubs would’ve loved that feature), plush bathrobes & slippers. My favorite part? The sheet towels. There really is nothing worse than trying to dry off with one of those teeny-tiny washcloths hotels try and pass off for towels.

#3: The Spa.For our honeymoon, we were fortunate to stay at one of the top rated spas in the world. Because of this fact, I’m a self proclaimed spa snob.

I will say D.Tour Spa was pretty darn awesome. We checked out some of the amenities while we waited for our treatments: The whirlpool tub, sauna, steam room and rain shower. The massage was oh so relaxing. After treatments, we had some fruit water in our comfy lounge chairs. We had to tear ourselves away to go back to the spa lounge to rejoin our preggo friend.

#4: The Food.MotorCity Casino is home to Hour Magazine’s 2011 Restaurant of the Year: Iridescence. As I said in a tweet while we were dining, there’s a reason for this. You’re on one of the top floors of the hotel which creates yet another fantastic view of Detroit. The food and service were both top shelf.I would highly recommend the Arugula Salad and Filet of Beef. A few dishes that caught my eye on the way to other tables (I resisted tackling the waiter): The Modern Potato Skins and Lamb Medallions.#5: The Club. It’s not often you find me in da club. I was surprised the place didn’t crumble to pieces the moment 3 surburban moms walked in.We started our night at Amnesia with a little bit of people watching (that’s what we do in our 30′s). We then did a little head bopping to music from the 80′s & 90′s. All songs from back in the day. None of the oonce-oonce-oonce typical club music. I say typical as though I’m in the clubs a lot.We finally hit the dance floor the moment we heard P. Diddy. Or Puff Daddy. Or Diddy. Whatever he was back at that time. Regardless, I was dancing for the first time outside of a wedding in years. We all turned into pumpkins around 1 a.m. (don’t judge – it was a record late night for me) and headed back to our cozy suite. I felt great. We were rejuvinated after our spa visit. We had an amazing adult dinner out. We were college kids again after hitting the dance floor. Thanks MotorCity Casino Hotel for a fantastic mommy getaway! I will be back. Are you booked next weekend?

Disclosure: I received a complimentary one-night stay along with complimentary massages in the spa. In return, I would write a blog post about our weekend. All opinions are my own.
