What Do You Speak For?

May 9, 2012

The lovely Galit and Nicole are doing a fun link-up with the question to ask yourself as a blogger: “The Lorax speaks for the trees. What, or who, do you speak for?”

I speak for my kids. Someday, I hope, they will sit down and read about all of my adventures, and mishaps, in mommydom. They’ll have a first hand, well documented look at my experiences, thoughts & feelings I had while raising them.

If anything, I’ve provided a solid roadmap for their future therapist to follow, in order to correct the error of my ways.

I speak for Detroit (and Michigan). The perception that people have for Detroit, outside, and unfortunately sometimes inside, the state is very frustrating to me. Detroit, and Michigan in general, have some phenomenal things to offer and so, so much more to come.

Nothing excites me more than when I post a picture of something I’m doing in the city or the state and people comment with Is that really Michigan? or Is that really Detroit? Ok, well french fries with ranch and ketchup may excite me more. But that’s just because I gave up carbs. Before going carb free, the comments totally excited me the most.

I speak for all the moms who just want their sexy back. At least I hope to. I need to win this weight battle, for myself, more than any of you know. I want to use this as a space to share my good days, my bad days and my oh-my-god-I-need-a-cheeseburger-in-my-mouth-RIGHT-NOW days.

I speak for the peacocks. I don’t. We all know I’d never speak for them and their colorful, man-eating wings.

I speak for finding humor in parenting. I’d never classify myself as a humor blogger. But, I do try and laugh and poke fun at myself when I make mistakes in this parenting gig. It’s the toughest and most important job you’ll ever have. If you can’t laugh a little along the way, it’s going to be a very long road ahead.

I hope to start speaking for causes, and even maybe controversial topics, that are close to my heart. Not only hear on my blog, but on my other social media outlets as well.

I’ve shied away for too long from speaking my mind, in my small corner of the Internet, for fear that I may offend someone. But, since I have it (Thank you, Al Gore), I may just start to come out of my shell.

Yes, you’re still going to get the typical timeout tales, where I tell you about how I almost ruined my sons first day of preschool or how once I tried to run away, but turned back because it was all just so tiring.

We live in such an interesting time, where we all have the chance to use our voice to share our story.

Let yours be heard.

Blogging Ain’t Easy

I have belted out Ice Ice Baby for karaoke several times. At Gleek Retreat. At the Epic Tweetup last summer. At different #TechKaraoke events. Yes, I’m a bit addicted.

For VlogTalk this week, I decided to change the words to fit my life more. Watch out Robert Van Winkle. Mommy is on your tail.

Word to your blogmother.

For the lyrics to Blogging Ain’t Easy, in case you couldn’t understand my rapping, here they are:

Yo, tweeps, let’s kick it!

Alright post. Comment and share.
Blogging’s back and I vlog with flair.
Content, grabs ahold of me tightly
Blog like a mommy daily and nightly.
Will I ever stop? Yo; I don’t know?
Turn on the webcam, and I’ll glow.
To the extreme I rock a blog like a mommy
Write up a post and wordpress like a tsumani.

Blogging, you know it ain’t easy.
Deadline looms making you feel queasy.
Linkup, when I post a dope snapshot.
Check-in from a boat and call it my yacht.
Love it or leave it, you better page rank
If you don’t get the views, your hits will stank.
Got a full diaper? Yo, I’ll change it
Check out my redesign as soon as I arrange it.

Look out. I’m Blogging.

I’ve wanted to do a mommy blog for a while.  I’m a talker.  A talker to a fault as my husband might say.  I talk so much that it was something my husband incorporated into his wedding vows – begging me to stop.  My love of talking led me to blogging.  Get my thoughts out and maybe not ramble on as much at home.  Win-win for the husband.I thought a mommy blog would be a fun theme. I mean, it’s not like there are any of those out there, right? I’d like to give my kids something to read in the future. A time capsule for the little hooligans telling them my story, with a side of snark. It’s not all rainbows & sugarplums. If you’d like that, please visit www dot maryfreakinpoppins dot com.The idea of scrapbooking with quotes, stickers & funny sayings from our experiences overwhelms me. The boys baby books are still in their original box and completely blank. I have no idea the date Lanagan first walked or when Cooper first rolled over. Every milestone has a date with an ‘ish attached because I didn’t write it down. This is my chance to have something to give them.

I chose the title because my oldest son is constantly putting me in timeouts. Really. I tell him no. He replies with “timeout mommy”. Then in a more stern voice, “now”.Yes, the little Angel to my left who is seen here digging through my bag to find goodies is completely full of sass. He’s all kinds of awesome as well.I recently decided to take him up on it. Why not take a little timeout. Being a Mommy is tough & 3 years in, I’m freakin tired. I now sit in my “timeout chair” for 33 minutes. Yep, that’s right. 1 minute for each year. That’s the rule.I sit in my timeouts daily. Whether he puts me there or not. It’s the only thing I like about aging, it gives me 1 more minute of peace & quiet each year. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.Well here it is folks. My Mommy Blog. The thoughts I conjure up during my timeouts on being a mom, wife and all things related. Hope you enjoy.
