I wish I fly

While I was at work on Friday, the boys made me Mother’s Day cards. And of course, not your typical Hallmark card.

Lanagan’s card it read “Happy Mother’s Day. I wish I fly.”

Hmmm. When I questioned this statement, the latter part of course, he told me it’s “because I just want to do that. I just want to fly. Like a bird inside to a spaceship then inside then go up to the moon in the sky.” Got it.

I’m pretty sure that’s not how we’ll be spending Mother’s Day, but maybe we can make that happen for Father’s Day. I need a little notice to pull off a trip to the moon. Or even turn you into a bird, for that matter.

Then I asked why Cooper’s card was filled with scribbles. A lot of scribbles. Apparently, he uses these scribbles “because he not know how to use his words yet, mommy. He’s just a baby, not a big boy. So all he’ll give you are scribbles.“Well, scribbles and “I wish I fly” sounded like borderline perfect gives to me.

Remember when you were first dating someone and you would do things because you knew they liked it? You may have even lied and said “oh yes, I love that, too!” all the while wondering in your head what you had gotten yourself into? No? You never did things like that? When Charlie and I first started dating I coined myself as a runner (I never ran unless someone was chasing me), a hiker (I never hiked unless I was dropped off in the middle of the woods and then I ran out of there because an animal might start chasing me) and an athlete (a stretch as well. I played tennis but only hit the ball so it didn’t hit me.)Well, a few months in, when you typically give up this scam and show your true self, I started to realize I really liked running and hiking. I actually kind of craved it. Everyone who knew me wasn’t buying. While I’m still afraid of the animals we come across in the woods, ducks can really be vicious creatures, I do enjoy getting out in nature. Especially with my boys. So, when Charlie asked me what my perfect Mother’s Day would be, my reply was: Sleep in, a little alone time to go running in the morning and an afternoon family hike.I slept in, amidst two toddlers crawling on me. Nothing says “Happy Mother’s Day” like a swift kick to the face.We then spent the afternoon hiking at one of my favorite spots. Just like anything with parenting – things don’t alway go as planned. We made it about 20 feet before we were getting ice cream. Lanagan insisted on going in his old backpack that he barely fits into, while Cooper was kicking and screaming to get out and walk. Our hike was about a total of 20 yards. But, the boys had a great time picking up sticks and playing with rocks. Guess that’s all that matters in the end. What did you all do for Mother’s Day?
